Preamble #2: Depression Era Imagination

EXT. ROGER'S BACK YARD - DAY

Young Steve Rogers is prone behind a gigantic stump using a crutch as a makeshift rifle. His toy soldiers are lined up in various positions on the flat surface of the stump and he is studying them keenly.  His metal leg braces gleam in the bright sun.

STEVE'S FATHER:
I see you're playing soldier again, Stevie.

STEVE (7 y/o)
(mumbles)
Yes, father.

STEVE'S FATHER
Why aren't you horsing with the other kids today?

STEVE (7 y/o)
(glances at legs in brace)
They went to the river. I can't be near the water.

STEVE'S FATHER
I am sorry you are so sick all the time. I have never seen anyone fight so hard to get better just to get sick again. Seems to me that the Good Lord has a plan for you, son.

Steve moves several soldiers.

STEVE'S FATHER (cont'd)
(Steve's father picks up a small hand carved soldier and admires it)
Cheer up. It is a beautiful day and we're lucky to have enough land for you to have a yard. And you happen to have your men on a very important piece of wood.

STEVE (7 y/o)
I don't understand...

STEVE'S FATHER
See those rings? What do you suppose they mean?

STEVE (7 y/o)
Each one is a year...

STEVE'S FATHER
Right.
Steve's father now crouches down with Steve.

STEVE'S FATHER
You can count back one hundred and eighty years. This was a big old tree indeed. It's secret? This tree was alive for the Revolutionary War, The Civil War, The Great War and everything in between. Just count the rings if you don't believe me.

Steve excitedly positions his men again. This time calling out battles from history as he goes.

  1. Just a quick interchange between father and son. This is the second major element in Steve Roger's character. His health. He is not merely scrawny but sickly. He will be sick his whole life until it is time to transform into into an instrument of liberty and justice. Why is this important to who he is? This quick scene above also starts a theme of ripples/cause and effect as shown in the age rings of the tree stump. Steve is already associating cascading events in time with military actions. We cut Steve to the core too and find the significant rings in his life.
